A Crisis in Kyaka II Refugee Settlement – Uganda (East Africa Region)

Project: Rabbit Farming for Complementary Food Assistance & Economic Empowerment of Refugees.

Dear Supporter,

For years, Uganda has been a global model of refugee hospitality-hosting nearly 2 million people, more than any other country in Africa. Its progressive policies offered safety, land, and hope to families fleeing war in the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan.

That model is now at a breaking point; Severe humanitarian funding cuts have pushed Uganda’s refugee response system to the brink. The World Food Programme has slashed rations from assisting 1.6 million refugees in early 2025 to now reaching only 663,000. Supporting one refugee costs about $16 per month; current funding allows for just $5 per month per person.

The consequences in Kyaka II Settlement-home to over 130,000 refugees mostly from the Democratic Republic of Congo are devastating; Acute malnutrition among children under 5 has risen by nearly 50%, Protein-rich foods like meat, fish and eggs have dropped by 35.6% in refugee diets, Families have reduced daily meals, pulled children from school and turned to desperate coping measures. The international community has stepped back. Now, it’s up to us to step forward.

Our Solution: Hope on 4 Legs.

He Is Like Me International Ministries, a refugee-led organization working in Kyaka II, is offering a proven solution to both hunger and poverty through Rabbit farming. Rabbits are a rapid, sustainable source of protein and income. A single female produces an average of 60 offspring per year, providing steady nutrition and generating income through sales. They don’t need expensive feed or large land, making them perfect for the crowded Kyaka II refugee settlement.

We have seen the power of this work. One refugee entrepreneur in Uganda started with just four rabbits and used the profits to rent land, start a farming business, and build a better life for her family. That is the transformation we are bringing to Kyaka II. Families in this settlement are not looking for handouts; they are ready to work, ready to learn, and ready to build a future. They simply need a hand up.

The international community has pulled back, but we have not. The need is urgent, and the opportunity is real. Families are going hungry today. Children are dropping out of school. Malnutrition is rising. But with your help, we can offer something better than temporary aid; we can offer sustainable hope that lasts for generations.
